This exhibition focuses on artist groups that best embody the characteristics of the "era of communities": Chinese descent artists with distinct multicultural backgrounds who were born during or after the information technology revolution. The exhibition will observe how these artists navigate between the states described by “SUPERCROWDS” and “SUPERCOMMUNITY.” 

 

The concept of “SUPERCROWDS/SUPERCOMMUNITY” proposed by the exhibition not only refers to a new, era-specific mode of gathering (Togetherness) but also serves as a metaphor for a particular mode of empathy, encompassing two aspects of the same issue. The exhibition is divided into two parts: “SUPERCROWDS” and “SUPERCOMMUNITY.”

 

“SUPERCROWDS” addresses the new motivations for group gatherings: the younger generation, with their multicultural perspectives, find it challenging to establish a single, specific identity. Instead, they find emotional resonance through similar cultural experiences, emphasizing the “commonality and connection among individuals.” “SUPERCOMMUNITY,” emerging from the interactions of globalization and anti-globalization, breaks and restructures existing narratives, detaching cultural identity from geographical boundaries.

 

By combining “SUPERCROWDS” and “SUPERCOMMUNITY,” the exhibition proposes the concept of "cross-boundary community," aiming to provide individuals within a vast contextual background with a non-linear coordinate system more applicable to the current era. In this coordinate system, traditional influencing factors such as geographic boundaries, race, gender, and cultural background are excluded from the foundational elements of its construction. Each individual is regarded as a coordinate, connected through analogous cultural experiences and shared values, offering viewers positioning references and prospective outlooks.

 

Through their works, artists will reflect on and respond to these states, leading to the expectation that within the context of “SUPERCROWDS/SUPERCOMMUNITY,” the status quo faced by any individual will not be an exception. In the loose but solid unrestricted connections, it is possible to find an intimate place where identity and recognition can be repeatedly determined, and where emotional support and feedback are simultaneously provided.

The Future of Loneliness brings together contemporary international artists whose works, whether through their technique, medium or subject matter, touch upon questions of aloneness, intimacy and bodily touch, and whose practice opens up a space for re-conceiving ourselves in relation to the world around us. Eschewing a single framework of interpretation, the show constructs a heterogeneous architecture of loneliness, weaving together individual commentaries into a broader, entangled conversation. Whether experiencing solitude on a personal or structural level, it urges us to look with innovative, turbulent and restorative eyes, to understand what we truly value and to re-engender our place within the world. Loneliness is a special place.

Orbital reflects on the aesthetic and symbolic dimensions of the moon and moonlight. The included works wax and wane in continuous vacillation, propelled by the blind and driven forces of the seasonal and emotional. Focusing on phases of transformation, they capture the inevitable, fleeting, and mercurial, at once embodying solitude and communion, or dream and reality. Brought together in a sweeping cycle in the gallery, these paintings form their own recurrent rhythm of time, acting as testaments to what changes yet returns again and again.

A Gauzy Flame, featuring new works by Yage Guo, Esteban Jefferson, Poppy Jones, Cole Lu, and Paula Siebra. United by a muted colour palette, the pieces on view tell stories of myths and monuments, flashes of beauty in domestic settings, and memories of heat. The exhibition, titled after a lyrical and sensory fragment by Sappho, will take place in the gallery’s East London premises and marks the Herald St debut for all included artists. Hailing from London, New York, rural Sussex, and northern Brazil, they question historic tenets of painting, offering fresh plays on traditional subjects and mediums. Blurry and burning, fleeting and timeless, the works in A Gauzy Flame radiate with a hazy, emotive power.

Yage Guo’s paintings find inspiration in legends and literature. In her recent output, she depicts scenes steeped in melancholy from medieval tales of heraldry and novels such as Albert Camus’ L’étranger. Androgynous figures emerge in incandescent silhouettes cast against jet black grounds, seemingly lost in thought. Guo’s work is characterised by an ethereality, portraying visions which are at once softly blurred and sharply focused. Set within romantic backdrops of stained-glass windows and fields of forget-me-nots, her new paintings are imbued with an oneiric and palpable atmosphere. Guo inserts her own emotions into her work, charging them with ephemeral memories.
